The midwest has many great travel destinations that are perfect for families. No matter what a family’s budget is, they can have an unforgettable vacation.

Branson, Missouri

Families who want to spend time outdoors on their vacation often choose Branson, Missouri as their destination. One of the highlights of a visit there is the Vigilante Extreme Zipliner. But other popular attractions include the Titanic boat establishment houses which hold much of the Titanic’s wreckage, family-friendly museums, and theaters that host Broadway shows and acrobatic shows.

North Dakota

Other destinations great for families include North Dakota‘s Theodore Roosevelt National Park. The park features its famous Scenic Route Drive, which spans 36 miles. Visitors can also see the Maltese Cross, a cabin that Roosevelt once lived in. Many families choose to stay at the Rough Riders Hotel, which features an on-site restaurant serving Western cuisine, called Theodore’s Dining Room.

South Dakota

Keystone South Dakota is another destination worth choosing. Many families travel here in order to see Mount Rushmore. Activities include a gold panning tour that runs for four hours, riding a zipline through the forest, and exploring the many Keystone caves. Families also enjoy visiting the Rush Mountain Adventure Park.

Bloomington, Minnesota

For an indoor experience, the entire family can enjoy a trip to the Mall of America, in Bloomington, Minnesota. More than just a mall, it contains a full-sized amusement park complete with a roller coaster, Ferris Wheel, and a free-fall ride. It also has attractions like a blacklight mini-golf, a movie theater, a flight simulator, and even an aquarium. There are also more than 50 restaurants to choose from.


A more secluded getaway can be found on Michigan‘s Mackinac Island. Located on Lake Huron, this destination is free of any cars. Locals and tourists get around on foot or by bike. Not only can families tour the island on foot they can choose to rent paddle boards or a kayak. Some of the visual highlights of the island include lighthouses, rock formations, and caves.


Dubuque, Iowa is also a family-friendly destination. Close to the water is the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium. Other popular attractions include Crystal Lake Cave, some botanical gardens, and the Mines of Spain Recreation. Those that visit during the winter months also go skiing at Sundown Mountain.
